We offer a broad and balanced curriculum in a hands-on, exciting way that makes children want to learn. The children are taught English and Maths every day, with a daily phonics and basic skills session. Other subjects are taught in a themed way, with links to English and Maths where possible. We believe the children learn best this way as they are able to make links in their learning.
We aim to make the transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage as smooth as possible, and so take many of the principles of how young children learn and use them in Key Stage One. We have ‘workshop’ areas in both Year 1 and Year 2, where the children are provided with practical activities that aim to consolidate and extend their learning. For example, both classes have a role-play area linked to the termly topic, as well as reading, writing, maths and creative areas. We are also lucky to have an outdoor area attached to our classrooms to provide additional continuous provision opportunities. Our topics have a ‘launch’ activity, or an ‘exit’ to celebrate our learning, involving parents wherever possible. The transition from Year 2 to Year 3 is also well-managed, to prepare the children for the challenges of KS2.
