Edale Rise Primary and Nursery School

Physical Education

Intent

At Edale Rise Primary and Nursery School, our PE curriculum is designed to ensure every child lives a happy, active lifestyle, develops a love of movement and builds the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a wide range of physical activities. Pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum, including athletics, dance, gymnastics, games and swimming.

Beyond physical development, PE supports pupils’ cognitive, social and emotional wellbeing, helping them to become confident, resilient and collaborative learners. Opportunities for competition, leadership and enrichment ensure pupils develop a positive attitude towards lifelong health and fitness.

Implementation

PE is taught through a progressive curriculum built around four key areas of development: physical, cognitive, social and emotional wellbeing. Learning is sequenced to build skills over time, with a focus on fundamental movement in EYFS and KS1, and the application of skills in sports and competition in KS2.

Pupils access a wide range of activities, including invasion, net/wall and striking/fielding games, alongside dance, gymnastics and athletics. Swimming is taught in upper Key Stage 2. PE lessons take place twice-weekly, supported by daily physical activity through play, active breaks and extracurricular opportunities.

A wide range of enrichment opportunities, including clubs, competitions, sports events and leadership roles, further enhance provision. Teaching is inclusive and adapted to support all pupils to succeed and make progress.

Impact

Pupils develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities. They demonstrate increasing competence, resilience and teamwork, and understand the importance of leading healthy, active lives.

Assessment is used effectively to track progress and support all learners. By the end of primary school, pupils are physically literate, enjoy being active and are well-prepared for continued participation in sport and physical activity at secondary school and beyond.
