Edale Rise Primary and Nursery School

Art and Design

Intent

At Edale Rise Primary and Nursery School, our Art and Design curriculum aims to inspire creativity, develop confidence, and enable all pupils to express their ideas and experiences through a wide range of artistic forms. Rooted in our school vision of improving life chances through knowledge and developing well-rounded individuals, the curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to explore, experiment and create.

Our carefully sequenced curriculum ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum and is underpinned by progression in key skills and knowledge. Pupils study a diverse range of artists, cultures and artistic movements, reflecting both the richness of our community and the wider world. We enrich learning through experiences such as gallery visits, artist workshops, and participation in local cultural initiatives.

Implementation

Art and Design is delivered through a structured and progressive curriculum built around five key strands:

  • Generating ideas
  • Using sketchbooks
  • Developing making skills (including formal elements such as line, shape, tone, texture, colour and pattern)
  • Understanding artists and their work
  • Evaluating and analysing

Learning is sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, following a spiral approach where key concepts are revisited with increasing complexity. Each year, pupils engage in units across four core areas:

  • Drawing
  • Painting and mixed media
  • Sculpture and 3D
  • Craft and design

Lessons are practical, explorative and knowledge-rich, enabling pupils to develop technical proficiency alongside creativity. Sketchbooks are used to capture ideas and support reflection. Teaching is inclusive and adapted to ensure all pupils can succeed and develop their individual artistic voice. Art is taught on a half-termly rotation with Design and Technology, ensuring regular and sustained engagement.

Impact

Through our Art and Design curriculum, pupils develop confidence, creativity and a strong understanding of artistic techniques and processes. They produce high-quality, individual outcomes and are able to reflect on and evaluate their work using subject-specific language.

Assessment is both formative and summative, enabling teachers to track progress, adapt teaching and support all learners, including those with additional needs. Pupils are actively involved in discussing their work and identifying next steps, developing independence and critical thinking.

By the end of primary school, pupils will:

  • Produce creative, imaginative work informed by their experiences
  • Demonstrate proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse artwork confidently
  • Understand significant artists and the cultural development of art
  • Be well-prepared for continued study in Art and Design at Key Stage 3
