Maths

Intent

At Edale Rise, we ensure all children become confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians. Our ambitious curriculum is underpinned by a mastery approach, where knowledge is carefully sequenced in small, coherent steps so that all pupils develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematics.

Using a DfE-approved scheme (Power Maths), we provide a curriculum that is progressive from EYFS to Year 6 and prioritises the development of:

  • Fluency in number and calculation, including rapid recall of key facts
  • Reasoning, where pupils explain and justify their thinking using precise mathematical language
  • Problem-solving, enabling pupils to apply their knowledge confidently in a range of contexts

We place particular emphasis on mathematical fluency and automaticity, ensuring pupils have the secure foundations needed for success in more complex mathematics and everyday life.

Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily across the school through a consistent mastery approach, ensuring all pupils access the full curriculum and progress together.

Teaching is characterised by:

  • Carefully structured small steps, enabling depth of understanding before moving on
  • Use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations to support conceptual understanding
  • A balance of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving activities within each lesson
  • Regular retrieval practice and arithmetic to embed and strengthen key knowledge

High-quality resources, including Power Maths, White Rose Maths, Numbots and TT Rockstars, support consistency, engagement and progression across the school.

Teaching is responsive and adaptive, with ongoing assessment and live feedback used to address misconceptions and provide timely support or challenge. Pupils are encouraged to talk mathematically, explain their reasoning and build understanding through discussion.

In EYFS, children develop early mathematical understanding through a balance of direct teaching, focused tasks and rich continuous provision.

Impact

As a result, pupils at Edale Rise:

  • Develop secure and connected mathematical knowledge
  • Demonstrate strong fluency and recall of key facts
  • Can reason and explain their thinking clearly
  • Apply their skills to solve problems with confidence and resilience

Assessment, including ongoing formative approaches, retrieval practice and statutory measures, ensures progress is carefully tracked and informs teaching.

Pupils leave Edale Rise as confident mathematicians, well-prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped with essential skills for life.
