Geography

Intent

At Edale Rise, the Geography curriculum is ambitious, knowledge-rich and designed to equip pupils with the understanding they need to make informed decisions about the future of the planet. The curriculum develops strong knowledge of physical and human geography, structured through six ‘Big Ideas’: The Physical World, Human Environments, Interdependence, Place and Space, Scale, and Young People’s Lives. Pupils gain a deep understanding of sustainability, environmental responsibility and global issues, while developing a strong sense of agency. Knowledge is carefully selected to be broad, powerful and cumulative, ensuring pupils are fully prepared for Key Stage 3.

Implementation

The curriculum is coherently sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, building progressively from local understanding to complex global concepts. Units are structured around clearly defined knowledge, vocabulary and outcomes, ensuring consistency and clarity for teachers and pupils. Learning is organised through the six ‘Big Ideas’, revisited across the curriculum to deepen understanding. Pupils are taught to work as geographers by asking questions, analysing data, using maps and sources, and drawing conclusions. Regular retrieval practice ensures knowledge is retained over time. Place studies develop pupils’ understanding of global locations, including climate, culture and land use. Reading and writing are embedded to strengthen knowledge and communication, with structured opportunities for extended writing and discussion. Each unit includes a clear outcome, allowing pupils to apply knowledge and demonstrate their understanding.

Impact

Pupils develop secure, well-sequenced knowledge of key geographical concepts and processes. They are able to ask and answer questions using a range of sources and demonstrate a clear understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment. Pupils confidently compare places at different scales, from local to global, and think critically about issues such as climate change and sustainability. They communicate their understanding effectively through speaking and writing. Assessment includes an ongoing formative assessment and a twice-yearly summative assessment to track progress and inform teaching. Pupils leave primary school confident, reflective and prepared for further study in geography.

By the end of Year 6, pupils are well-prepared for Key Stage 3 geography and leave as informed, responsible citizens with a strong awareness of their role in shaping the future.
