Edale Rise Primary and Nursery School

French

At Edale Rise we foster a positive attitude towards language learning. We learn French as our chosen language. We believe that learning a language will help us to become better communicators. We will be able to use our knowledge and skills with confidence to understand what we hear and read, and we will develop our oracy skills through a range of interactive, fun and motivating activities. We learn about how useful language is in the work environment and develop an understanding of and a respect for other cultures.

In Key Stage 1 we focus on oral skills, to give the children confidence and make sure learning a new language is fun and stimulating. These skills are then further developed in KS2 when we also introduce writing skills. We make regular contact with our partner school (Madame de Sevigne, Ecole elementaire publique, in Ancenis, France), when the children have the opportunity to converse with French pupils. Previously, two teachers from our partner school (Ecole Publique Madame de Sevigne) have visited us, spending time with children across the whole school, sharing stories, rhymes and discussing the similarities and differences between life at school in France and in England. We are also working collaboratively with another primary school in Nottingham, giving the children the opportunity to demonstrate and practise their linguistic skills.
